Selective attention is the process of focusing on a particular object in the environment for a certain period of time. Attention is a limited resource, so selective attention allows us to tune out unimportant details and focus on what matters. This differs from inattentional blindness, which is when you focus hard on one thing and fail to notice unexpected things entering your visual field. Visual spatial attention is a form of visual attention that involves directing attention to a location in space. Similar to its temporal counterpart visual temporal attention, these attention modules have been widely implemented in video analytics in computer vision to provide enhanced performance and human interpretable explanation of deep learning models.   The attention mechanism was born to resolve this problem. Let’s break this down into finer details. Since I have already explained most of the basic concepts required to understand Attention in my previous blog, here I will directly jump into the meat of the issue without any further adieu. 2. The central idea behind AttentionAuthor: Harshall Lamba.

We are studying not just the mechanisms of attention, but also how neurons in different layers of the cortex are participating in encoding visual information. Once we start understanding these circuits, we are going to target neurons in different layers using more advanced optogenetic : Huaqi Li. Attention Mechanisms As a bit of a historical digression, attention research is an enormous field with a long history in cognitive neuroscience. Focalization, concentration of consciousness are of the essence of attention, which enable the human to prioritize the perception in order to deal effectively with others.

The book covers a number of broad themes relevant to visual attention, ranging from computer vision to psychology and physiology of vision. The main theme of the book is the attention processes of vision systems and it aims to point out the analogies and the divergences of biological vision with the frameworks introduced by computer scientists.

“Visual attention” refers to the cognitive operations that allow us to efficiently deal with this capacity problem by selecting relevant information and by filtering out irrelevant information.

Find Format: Hardcover. Abstract. What neural mechanisms enable us to intentionally enhance visual perception at a specific location. Investigations using behavioral, neurophysiological, neuropharmacological, computational, neuroimaging, and electroencephalographic methods have revealed many ways in which visual processing is modulated by voluntary visual-spatial attention.

This book presents a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary perspective on psychological, physiological and computational approaches to understanding the neurobiology of attention.

Ideal for students, as a reference handbook or for rapid browsing, the book has a. This handbook summarizes empirical findings and data concerning attention and attentional tasks.

It presents a comprehensive view of the current state of theory in the field of attention by investigating a wide range of interrelated topics, including the rules of guidance, the mechanics of visual search, and the relationship of these processes to visual awareness.

Recent studies show that neuronal mechanisms for learning and memory both dynamically modulate and permanently alter the representations of visual stimuli in the adult monkey : Robert Desimone. The similarities between auditory and visual perception in complex scenes suggest that common neural mechanisms control attention across modalities.

Moreover, a framework based on auditory object formation and auditory object selection can help explain results of Cited by: This chapter examines the classical psychophysical view of selective visual attention, and the physiological findings that suggest an alternative neurodynamical view based on the biased competition hypothesis.

It discusses the computational models of visual attention, the biased competition hypothesis in single-cell studies, and the neuropsychology of attention. Attention Mechanism for CNN and Visual Models Not everything in an image or text— or in general, any data—is equally relevant from the perspective of insights that we need to draw from it.

For example, consider a task where we are trying to predict the next word in a sequence of a verbose statement like Alice and Alya are friends. The broad term "attention" describes a set of different but related processes, including visual attention orienting, auditory attention, executive attention, covert attention, etc.

The work discussed here examines the mechanisms of visual attention orienting to a select location in space, beginning in infancy. McMains and Somers • Divided Spatial Attention Mechanisms J. Neurosci., Octo • 25(41) – • functional maps were used to subdivide these two ROIs on the basis of.

Attention is the behavioral and cognitive process of selectively concentrating on a discrete aspect of information, whether considered subjective or objective, while ignoring other perceivable information. It is a state of William James () wrote, "[Attention] is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible.

Box 1 | Neuronal mechanisms for the control of attention The brain regions that participate in the deployment of visual attention include most of the early visual processing area.A simplified overview of the main brain areas involved is shown in the information enters the primary visual.

Visual attention was conceived of as a mental process which operated on the retinal image. Michael Posner conceptualised a process sometimes termed a mental spotlight, which could pick out part of the retinal information (e.g.

Posner, ), and Anne Treisman suggested a role that such a spotlight could play in visual search (e.g. Treisman, ).Biased competition theory advocates the idea that each object in the visual field competes for cortical representation and cognitive processing.

This theory suggests that the process of visual processing can be biased by other mental processes such as bottom-up and top-down systems which prioritize certain features of an object or whole items for attention and further processing.
